Dr Lim Boon Keng introduces us to Singapore 1905, a world of gangsters, prostitutes and rickshaw coolies. Lin is forced to work in the brothel, Blue Willow House. The Japanese courtesan Marakusa befriends Lin. To save Lin from rape, Marakusa asks her lover, Hong, to fight the Gangster Boss, and rewards him with one night of love.
